The notion of the American dream figures prominently in this story. How do readers define the American dream? Moreover, is pursuing the American dream necessarily a good thing?
To many of us, the American Dream is something everyone looks up to. Not everyone will or has the luck to live that or maybe it's not about luck, perhaps it's just us. In the Great Gatsby we see that the American dream can turn your life upside down. Gatsby rose from poor into the rich world out of nowhere. In my personal opinion, I don't think he tried as hard. If you really want something in life you have to go after it and accomplish it. In life, nothing everything will come to you if you don't try. In order to get what you want you have to work everything off and set your mind only to that. Many times, the American dream can turn from a dream into an obsession. An obsession because we want it so bad that we don't care what we do.
When we hear the words "American Dream," money is probably the first thing that pops into our head. Then living status, cars, parties, and all that extravagant stuff. In The Great Gatsby we see that the American Dream is all about the fortune and the good quality living status. A man with a extremely huge house just for himself. A man throwing these extravagant parties for the people, not for him. Everyone knowing him and always talking about him. We might come to realize that the American dream might be all that just because that's how we see it in The Great Gatsby, but in reality, it's not. The American Dream is about having a better future and having something that mostly all people don't get to have, so due to that we have to cherish it. The American Dream doesn't necessarily always have to be about the money and luxuries. Just by accomplishing what you want in this life can be considered the American Dream. Having a stable home, job, and family in America can be more than enough. Becoming a better person or living in a better status can be a great example of the American Dream.
The American Dream doesn't always have to be a bad thing for the people. It might have its negatives but it sure does have its positives too. Keeping the people believing will make them better by having something to motivate them in life. People don't accomplish things if they don't put their minds to it. We have to put our minds to something we really want to accomplish in order for us to reach it. Not having motivation is like a bird not having wings. A bird without wings can't really get to where it wants to go, it can go places but it'll just take him longer or he might not even get there. For example, Gatsby used to live in North Dakota with his poor farming family. He knew that that life wasn't for him and he was supposed to be up there in society no matter what. He was determined in what he wanted so he strived to accomplish it. He once had a Dream, but he accomplished it. He might have not done much to accomplish it, let's just say he was one lucky man. Everything in life can come easy or it can come hard, it's up to us to decide which way we want it.
The American Dream can be bad for some people. We might wish is so bad that it can become an obsession. It might be an obsession that we might do anything but everything we do might come out bad. When we wish for something we always have to understand that we might not always be able to accomplish it. Everything in this life has a price, it can either be money or even our own life's. There are people in this world that might be living what we really desire, so we learn to envy them and after to hate them. Wishing of the American Dream can bring hatred to his world that can lead to very serious situations. In The Great Gatsby we see that Gatsby has a somewhat obsession, not of the American Dream but with the love of his life. He outgrew and obsession towards Daisy due to what he accomplished. He wanted the American Dream so bad to prove to Daisy that he was worth it. He accomplished that thinking that Daisy will realize what she's missing and come back to him like she was once his. Due to his obsession he didn't realize how bad of a person Daisy really was. Daisy was a girl with a Dream, she wanted everything in this world, which includes money. Daisy was a horrible gold digger. But Gatsby was too blind with his obsession for him to realize that.
In conclusion, the American Dream is something everyone wants in this life. It can bring negatives and positives to people lives but that's just how it works. There will be things that will challenge you to see if you can overcome them and see what kind of a person you are. We all have a Dream in this world, and for most, it's the American Dream. We just have to realize that not everything comes free to our hands. We as individuals have to work hard in order to achieve our goal. To overcome all obstacles and be better persons each day. Looking at the American Dream with much desire, will probably help in our journey to obtaining it. But let's not diside it to much, for it might become and obsession.
