BIG BROTHER'S FIRST IMPRESSION

I'm going to be honest here. I didn't read through the whole thing but I did skim through out. I didn't understand most of it, I got lost at some point but managed to somewhat keep up. My opinion towards it is simple, in a way, English is very confusing. Which is why I didn't understand most of what I just read. Of what I understood, Orwell really does understand the way every student speaks. The language we use that in some way it's confusing.

I'M READING BIG BROTHER

Politics and the English Language By George Orwell

·         Our civilization is decadent and our language

·         any struggle against the abuse of language is a sentimental archaism

-archaism-a thing that is very old or old-fashioned

·         decline of a language must ultimately have political and economic causes

·         slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts

·         Modern English, especially written English, is full of bad habits

·         vagueness and sheer incompetence is the most marked characteristic of modern English prose

·         DYING METAPHORS

- assists thought by evoking a visual image

- metaphor which is technically ‘dead’

-save the trouble of picking out appropriate verbs and nouns

- keynote is the elimination of simple verbs

-range of verbs is further cut down by means of the -ize and de- formations

·         PRETENTIOUS DICTION

- phenomenon, element, individual (as noun), objective, categorical, effective, virtual, basic, primary, promote, constitute, exhibit, exploit, utilize, eliminate, liquidate, are used to dress up a simple statement

-dignify the sordid process of international politics

BAD WORDS

In my opinion what makes words mad is the way how people use them. Words aren't really bad, only when you don't use them properly. Words can be used in many different ways, either in a good or bad way. The idea of Bad words increase understanding between people because of how often they use them. If people wouldn't use bad words daily then the people would'nt really know or understand them.

Vocabulary #3 Definitions and Sentences

1.slovenliness- untidy especially in personal appearance
sentence: A kids room is usually slovenliness.
2.frivolous- not having any serious purpose or value
sentence: The reading she read was frivolous.

Satire Project

I decided to do my satire project on Disney movies because I have noticed that many of them have irony in them. They offend/ make fun of people without us knowing. I wasn't able to print my solution out today but I'll just say it here. My solution was that for people to actually know what they and their kids are watching, Disney should make a movie where it shows all the satire/ irony clearly for people to see. To show how princesses can only be skinny, beautiful, and rich girls. Or that beautiful girls can get any guy to like her just because of her beauty not because of her personality. Disney Princess movies also deliver a lot of negative messages, in my opinion. They deliver the message of how being pretty is always the key to everything. Or that wealth can buy you anything you want in the world. Or even worse, how it's sometimes okay to steal. There are many ways to make people see the irony in movies. But the only way to show them will be for Disney to make a movie showing all that, as I said before.
